Lufthansa FOX – The New Long-Haul Experience

Two years of development, 110 test flights, 28 menu presentations, and extensive logistics went into what Lufthansa describes as the largest single investment ever made for its passengers. Around 70 million euros (81.5 US-Dollar) will be invested during the first twelve months of the new Future Onboard Experience (FOX), on top of existing spending dedicated to the guest experience. Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter aims to deliver more personalization, comfort, and signature moments onboard. To make this possible, around 187 (!) million individual onboard items have been replaced or newly introduced across the airline’s entire fleet in recent months. FOX is now available on all Lufthansa long-haul flights. LuxuryWise takes a closer look at what’s new in First Class, Business Class, and Premium Economy.

First Class

FOX has already been launched here at the end of March. The most significant First Class update concerns the menus: passengers are now served a meal concept created by two-star chef Christoph Kunz. Courses are carefully curated, while the main course offers a choice between a single signature dish or a full tasting menu. The caviar service has also been upgraded with the addition of blinis. The beverage selection has been expanded for FOX, adding new mocktails, cocktails, and long drinks. Lufthansa is also serving Veuve Clicquot’s prestige cuvée La Grande Dame for the first time. Passengers can now choose between this and the regularly changing premium champagne selection. The new Barbor amenity kit also allows travelers to select the products best suited to their needs, which are then delivered directly to the seat by the crew.

Business Class Business Class guests can also look forward to new culinary highlights as part of the FOX program. One of them is the new cake service (pictured), created by the airline as a dedicated signature moment. Passengers can choose from cakes and pastries served onboard. For the menus themselves, Lufthansa partnered with celebrity chef Johann Lafer, whose creations are now being served on long-haul Business Class flights. While the first meal service continues to take place at a fixed time, passengers can now decide when and what they would like to eat during the second service. The new Sky Selection menu offers both small and larger dishes, including currywurst, macarons, and tapas bowls. In addition, the new breakfast menu can now be pre-selected the evening before. All meals are served on newly designed custom tableware – including 300,000 newly introduced main-course plates for Business Class alone.

Premium Economy In this cabin, Lufthansa is putting the focus on added comfort. The entire first meal service is being upgraded: according to the airline, appetizers will now match Business Class standards, passengers can choose from three hot meal options, and warm bread will also be offered. And yes – cake or pastries are now part of the service here as well. Lufthansa is additionally expanding the beverage selection, increasing drink service frequency, and introducing digestifs. And speaking of comfort: Premium Economy guests now also receive slippers onboard. Good to know: Lufthansa is introducing menu cards and amenity kits with earplugs and sleep masks in Economy Class for the first time. On flights longer than ten hours, passengers can choose from three hot meal options. The overall drink selection is also being expanded, while Economy Class receives new tableware and silverware.
