LuxuryLive: Airtours Discover Marrakesch
Sunshine, please! Airtours invited around 60 luxury travel advisors to its Airtours Discovery event in the enchanting city of Marrakech. With ongoing disruptions related to the Middle East and plenty of gray skies back home, participants didn’t need much convincing to swap their desks for a few days of fresh inspiration. LuxuryWise joined this trip and quite literally reached new heights…
As experienced by LuxuryWise Editor-in-Chief Iris M. Köpke

A warm welcome to Morocco: the gentle sound of water and clear blue skies set the tone as the travel advisors arrive at their host hotel, Four Seasons Resort Marrakech.

Just follow the sounds of traditional music and you’ll soon arrive at the Airtours Hospitality Lounge – where warm welcomes and plenty of delicious bites await.

Time to soak up some sunshine: the Airtours advisors settle into their private section of the Inara Terrace, overlooking the resort’s main pool. Soooo nice to be here!

A great start: each guest gets to choose a handcrafted Moroccan leather bag as a welcome gift. Not an easy decision – they all look amazing!

And that’s not all: the advisors are treated to a selection of welcome gifts, including sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle, and a custom Airtours Marrakech mug.

Once again, the instructions are simple: follow the sounds of Moroccan music and you’re on the right track. After the site inspection, everyone gathers by the pool.

A beautiful candlelit pathway leads the way to dinner, where the Four Seasons team awaits with a traditional open-air buffet. A bit chilly – but also really beautiful.

Airtours Director and host Steffen Boehnke welcomes the travel professionals to the third Airtours Discovery – that is, if you count the events of the post-pandemic era.
Feels a bit like a high school field trip: laughter, gossip, and a touch of business talk – the joy of seeing each other again can be felt everywhere. Travel advisors catch up, swap stories, and keep each other in the loop. Many of them are seasoned "Airtours regulars" who have known each other for years – which makes the atmosphere even more relaxed (and a little louder).

The Four Seasons clearly knows a thing or two about food presentation: desserts are beautifully displayed on a wooden cart, while a whole lamb is grilled in an earth oven…

… and this lovely lady bakes warm, freshly made flatbread in a traditional Moroccan oven – quite possibly the best we've ever tasted. And there are even mini chicken tagines!

In between, a quick stop at the henna artist is a must – here, Valentina Albrigo from TUI Reisecenter Flamingo in Dachau gets an intricate design painted on her hand.

Day two kicks off with the Airtours Forum: Director Steffen Boehnke shares the latest updates from the Airtours universe and key developments in the luxury segment.

Victoria Matteucci, Account Director Europe at Four Seasons Worldwide Sales Office, also takes the opportunity to present the brand's latest news to the travel advisors.
"The Airtours Discovery is an incredibly valuable exchange with like-minded people. Together, we get to experience a new destination, share feedback, and learn about the latest updates from Airtours. That way, we always stay up to date in the luxury segment, but also gain insight into the broader tourism trends that the TUI Group is seeing overall. This is actually my first time in Marrakech. And an event like this truly is – and always will be – a highlight. When you connect with the hotels and the destination, it creates a very unique atmosphere: you pick up on trends and really get a feel for the lifestyle. And I can absolutely enjoy this trip – despite the situation in the Middle East, despite the Lufthansa strike. When you’ve worked in tourism for many years, you’ve experienced quite a few crises, including the pandemic – I think by now you know how to deal with these things in a more relaxed way. You also develop a certain instinct for where it’s still possible to travel and where it might be better not to. And in the end, I’m someone who always looks ahead with a positive mindset and shows up whenever possible." Deniz Berk, Airtours Travel Boutique · Mallorca, Spain
Site Inspection 2: The Oberoi Marrakech

She’s got it figured out: even during a busy site inspection, Sylvia Daniels from First Reisebüro in Heinsberg finds time to sit back and enjoy the moment. Doing it right!

Airtours Director Boehnke goes the extra mile for the perfect social media shot – even risking wet feet. The travel advisors capture the moment with great interest. Ooof… all went well!

Time to head back in: at Restaurant Tamimt, the Oberoi Marrakech serves up an Indian buffet with views of the Atlas Mountains. Just what we needed to recharge!

Up next, Beate Arnold presents the latest highlights from Airtours Private Travel. Egypt is trending, especially luxury Nile cruises and the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

No Discovery event would be complete without him: Oliver Kreipe from Airtours & Friends introduces the latest luxury trends. Anyone else seeing a rise in "kidult" clients?
"This is already my third Airtours Discovery trip. Since we generate strong business with Airtours, I try to attend every Discovery trip whenever possible – and I genuinely get a lot out of it. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the destination and experience new products, especially hotels, which adds real value to the trip. Of the hotels we’ve seen so far, I particularly like the Four Seasons where we’re staying. It’s one of my favorite hotel brands worldwide and also one of our top-selling luxury brands for our clients. I really like this specific property – both overall and especially for its service. My highlight of the trip so far was definitely this morning’s hot air balloon ride. For this afternoon, I’ve booked the excursion to visit the Secret Garden in the city center, which I’m really looking forward to – it’s my first time in Marrakech." Next stop: a quick photo op at the iconic Koutoubia Mosque! It's not open to visitors – but we wouldn't have time anyway: another iconic landmark is already waiting for us…

We’ve got our priorities straight – Insta pics first! This beautiful archway simply can’t be ignored. Right in the middle of the photo: Claudia Janner-Moser from Airtours Austria.

And off we go again: quick pace along the mosque to the next site inspection – at a hotel that’s on many a bucket list. La Mamounia, here we come!

As befits a luxury hotel, not just anyone gets in – a serious looking doorman keeps a close eye on things. Luckily, we have a reservation for dinner. Travel advisor’s honor!

This thirsty visitor, however, had obviously no trouble getting in: a very self-confident cat helps itself to a cool drink from the huge lobby fountain.
Site Inspection 3: La Mamounia

Umm… wow?! This table it's actually not for an opulent Indian wedding – it’s the Airtours advisors' dinner following the site inspection. What a setup! And yes, the breaking news of a Lufthansa strike hitting just in time for our planned return annoys everyone… but we’re choosing to ignore that for now.

And yes, the breaking news of a Lufthansa strike hitting just in time for our planned return annoys everyone… but we’re choosing to ignore that for now.

Even the water glasses along the lavish, seemingly endless dinner table feature a colorful "La Mamounia" signature. Talk about attention to detail!

After a warm welcome from the hotel team, dinner is served at L’Italien by Simone Zanoni – creamy risotto, delicious fish, and beef carpaccio.

An early start – but well worth it: on day three, a sunrise hot air balloon ride just outside Marrakech is on the agenda. Already on cloud nine: Stefanie Weber from First Reisebüro in Neustadt.

Little do these cheerful passengers in the blue balloon know they’ve booked the, ahem, "extended edition" – with a touch of adventure included. Good thing the accompanying media outlet is on board to capture the moment!

Balloon pilot Kaley clearly means business – safety first is non-negotiable. And now: everyone sit down, please!

Up, up and away: according to Kaley, around 45 balloons take off at the same time this morning – and in peak season, there are even more.

From up here, it’s not just Marrakech glowing in the morning sun – the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains come into view, too. Wow!
Aaaand… we’re up! Gently drifting away from the ground… but wait – why are we suddenly so much higher than all the other hot air balloons…?!
Aaaand… we’re up! Gently drifting away from the ground… but wait – why are we suddenly so much higher than all the other hot air balloons…?!

… because we had to dodge another balloon. And just like that, we have landed far outside the designated flight zone – on the other side of the river, where the ground team can’t easily reach us. "PULL!!!" shouts Kaley, as our brave travel pros jump into action, hauling in the balloon from a muddy field. Soft adventure, anyone?

With the balloon basket blocking the dirt road, we quickly become the main attraction. Curious locals with their farm dogs gather around us – along with a donkey whose cart we’ve effectively parked in. As we roll up the balloon fabric (and get nicely dusted in the process), the pickup team finally arrives. Hallelujah!

After a delicious breakfast at the Four Seasons, it’s time to dive into the winding alleys of Marrakech’s medina. Finally!

Lunch is already waiting at the charming downtown restaurant Les Jardins du Lotus – but, but… didn’t we just have breakfast?!

So yes, the rumors are true: fam trips are basically one long meal. No one’s actually hungry – until truffle pasta is mentioned. In that case… yummy!
Bon Appetit – enjoy your lunch!
Bon Appetit – enjoy your lunch!

The souk in the medina is a tempting maze of tiny shops – from upscale boutiques to thrift stalls, spices, fresh produce, and the occasional piece of "designer" fashion. Simply irresistible!

Yesim Tasöz from TUI Reisecenter Schwabach (pictured left) and Stefanie Weber from First Reisebüro in Neustadt are in top form when it comes to bargaining with the local vendors.

Final stop: the last hotel on this Airtours Discovery is the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech. From the pool, the views stretch all the way to the impressive Atlas Mountains. Spoiler: the travel advisors loved it.

After a brief welcome at the outdoor restaurant The Tent, it’s time for one final site inspection – followed by a stylish farewell dinner at Ling Ling by Hakkasan. Somehow, this trip flew by way too fast!

Steffen Boehnke · Director Airtours
"With Airtours Discovery, we want to show our travel agency partners a destination – on the one hand our amazing hotel partners, but also to put the destination itself in the spotlight. At the same time, it’s always a way of saying thank you to our top advisors. Discovery is our biggest event of the year, into which we invest not only a lot of love and passion, but also our largest budget – and we do that very gladly. We also have our annual Airtours Future Event, which is much smaller and purely strategic in nature – it’s less about experiencing a destination. For Airtours Discovery, we choose destinations that are highly relevant for the travel industry and where there is something new happening in the luxury segment. The last time we were in Marrakech was eleven and a half years ago, and so much has changed here – especially in terms of hotel openings. It’s a fascinating city with so much to offer, and we have fantastic hotel partners on site. At the moment, the destination also fits well with the overall geopolitical situation. What I’m particularly pleased about is that many participants told us they had never been to Marrakech before: nearly 60 percent are here for the first time, and 40 percent are even visiting Morocco for the first time – that’s perfect! In addition, I also have the opportunity to have conversations that you often don’t get to have in day-to-day business. A phone call or a Teams meeting is simply not the same as sitting together here in a pleasant setting and exchanging ideas. We are convinced that we had so few cancellations despite the current number of rebookings for Middle East flights because we sent out invitations very early and were a bit lucky with the timing. There were certainly questions and concerns about whether this event would take place at all. For us, it’s a great sign of appreciation that so many people are here. We’re not revealing where we’ll be going next time just yet, but of course we’re already working on plans for next year. What we’re very happy about is that partners are now approaching us and asking if we might come to them. It has clearly been shown that a Discovery event increases bookings to the respective destination – for example, in Mauritius, where we were most recently, we’re seeing a strong increase.
I’m very happy with how this event has gone – everything on site worked exactly as planned, and that makes me very proud of our team, because in the end, it’s their success that made all of this possible. And for that, I’m very grateful."
