Fancy a trip back in time to Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century? Then step into the time capsule that is the Château Royal. The still young and unique hotel within walking distance of Brandenburg Gate brings the Wilhelminian era back to life – and with a magnificent contemporary art collection to boot.

The Accommodations

Just to be clear: no two rooms here are the same. There are a total of 93 accommodations in the Château Royal, including 26 suites and a 94 square meter (1,012sq. ft.) apartment (pictured). They are all furnished differently, since it's actually two different buildings – one dating from 1850 and the other from 1910. These distinct periods set the tone for the rooms, as Irina Kromeyer and her design team were inspired by materials that are emblematic of Berlin's heyday. Instead of carpets, guests will find herringbone parquet flooring, colorfully glazed masonry, tiles, pewter, and even glass bricks. Particularly harmonious are the many pieces of furniture that were made especially for the hotel in small artisanal workshops.

The Culinary

Hotel owner Stephan Landwehr is not completely new to the restaurant business – after all, he owns the famous Grill Royal, among others. The Château Royal restaurant has an international kitchen team who incorporate the flavors and dishes of their home countries into the menu, mainly Mediterranean. The vibe is casual dining in a special atmosphere both at lunch and at dinner time. The restaurant's high ceilings impressively extend over several connected areas, whose materials evoke that unique Berlin feel, just like the rooms. Anyone who prefers a more intimate setting can book the private dining room. As for the nightcap? Call the bartender over at the hotel bar of course, and order a few small bites for those late-night hunger pangs.

The Art

The very special USP and the not-so-secret star of the Château Royal: the works of art. The hotel is bursting with pieces curated by Kirsten Landwehr and created by more than 100 different artists. What's especially cool is that each one of the 93 rooms and suites has been "stocked" by a different artist. Each and every one of these room patrons has a close connection to Berlin and is acquainted with the owners. Guests can read who was responsible for what room on the respective door frame. The public areas are also full of paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and lamps that artists have created especially for the Château Royal. These include well-known artists such as Damian Hirst, Almut Heise, and Peter Saville.
