When you think of quintessential Scandinavian luxury, this is it. Nestled in its own private fjord, Åmot is the generational home of Steinar Sørli and his husband, Yngve Brakstad. Steeped in nature and with a deeply-rooted connection to its Norwegian heritage, this buyout-only property is a favorite of Norwegian royalty.

The Accommodations

Originally built in the 1890s, the property itself has been in the family for over 200 years. However, it wasn't until the 1990s when Sørli's aunt, a farmer, started hosting guests. Renovated in 2019 in an elegant, country living style and with conservation in mind, it was redesigned by Brakstad, an architect. Each room evokes a serious sense of place with its own unique charm. Tastefully decorated with storied family heirlooms, the feel of Åmot is inspired by how Sørli's late-aunt gathered the family here every summer, the spirit of which has clearly left an impression on the estate and its people, who are eager to share the experience. With a capacity of just 14 guests, the cottage, villa, and barn will leave your clients feeling like they've had a rare sampling of true Norway, as the owner tailors the experience to every guest.

The Culinary

Pronounced "Oimot," which means "where the two rivers meet," the setting of Åmot is ideal for anyone who's got a taste for the fresh, the untapped, and the untouched. Wild salmon swim through the rivers of this rural retreat, which clients can effectively call their own private fjord during their stay. Keep in mind that their hosts are farmers and fishermen, who adhere to practices that have been handed down and unchanged for centuries. They're chefs, musicians, artists, and storytellers that are just as happy to be entertaining their guests as much as they are catching crab, juicing fresh apples, crafting a salmon wrap from fish that's just come from the river, aging their own cheeses, or smoking their own meats. Meals are individually tailored and served family style in either the kitchen or the barn.

The Activities

There's only one word that can really capture what's available to clients at Åmot, and that's range. For guests who love the water, this experience will surely make a splash as they kayak or fish among the mountain peaks. For the especially adventurous, go on a glacier climb and explore the Nordic ice. Afterward, chill out with yoga and a hot tub as you take in the aurora borealis. While it might feel remote being so far from Bergen (160km/99mi.), Åmot has its own private seaplane and helicopter, which are of course experiences in themselves as your clients float over the fjords and snow-capped mountains. Got a history buff? Then take a cruise on a bonafide Viking longship. By the way, Åmot has the inside track on high-end Norwegian culture, and hosts the occasional private opera concert – sometimes with Norwegian Queen Sonja herself.
