Celebrity architect Philippe Starck created the life of fictional character Manfred Heler in a novel – right down to his house. Now, he’s made it real. Maison Heler, located in Metz, France, is a hotel like no other: a classic 18th-century Lorraine-style home dramatically perched atop a bold, nine-story modern base. It’s a surreal, head-turning blend of fiction and architecture.

The Culinary

Philippe Starck’s novel The Meticulous Life of Manfred Heler revolves around Manfred’s love for dining with his family – so it’s obvious that food plays a huge role in the hotel inspired by the book. Starck opened two restaurants in his new hotel: La Maison de Manfred, a grand dining room with vibrant stained glass, and La Cuisine de Rose (pictured), a brasserie named after the hero’s fictional love. Rose offers hearty, down-to-earth meals, while La Maison caters to gourmets with a five-course menu, Montbéliard tartare, and oysters with jambon de pays and cucumber sorbet. Even the cocktails echo Manfred’s creativity – think gin with cinnamon, brioche syrup, and roasted fruit. But don’t worry: classics and wines are on hand, too! There's obviously a drink solution for everyone!

The Accommodation

Thanks to its unique story and standout design, Maison Heler joined the Curio Collection by Hilton from day one. The hotel offers 104 rooms and suites spread across floors 2 to 8. The Guest Room is the most compact at around 25 square meters (269 square feet), but guests can also choose from Superior Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, Family Connecting Rooms, Junior Suites, and the spacious Manfred Suite, which stretches to 65 square meters (700 square feet). Every room carries the unmistakable touch of Philippe Starck. Expect a bold blend of cool minimalism and chic, curated furniture, elevated by warm, inviting tones. And for a playful twist? Peek inside the cabinets on the wall – you’ll find Manfred’s secret alphabet hidden within. Will your guests crack the code?

The Experiences

No surprise here: the hotel itself is an experience. To really dive in, read the fictional novel The Meticulous Life of Manfred Heler and enjoy spotting the novel’s touches throughout Maison Heler, Philippe Starck’s first hotel. From whimsical details to architectural echoes, the story comes alive in every corner. It’s also proudly family-friendly, welcoming curious kids and grown-up explorers alike. Just outside, you’ll find Metz’s vibrant Amphitheater Quarter – a modern hub with a TGV station for easy access. Nearby highlights include the Centre Pompidou-Metz for modern art lovers, the Muse shopping center, the Metz Robert Schuman Convention Centre, a large park, and the Arènes de Metz event venue – all just a short walk away and a good opportunity to indulge in the city.
